From 23–26 June 2026, the first International Conference of Palaeogenomics (ICP) was held in Stockholm, organized by the Centre for Palaeogenetics. The international symposium brought together more than 380 researchers, with ongoing research conducted at the Archaeogenomics Institute presented by two of our colleagues in the form of an oral presentation and a poster.

The four-day conference was hosted by Stockholm University, the Swedish Museum of Natural History, and Stockholm City Hall. The scientific programme featured selected talks and posters covering a wide range of topics, including human evolution, ancient DNA recovered from sediments, the genomes of wild and domesticated animals and plants, pathogens, as well as methodological advances in palaeogenomics.

Dániel Gerber, Research Fellow at our Institute, presented the archaeogenomic and bioinformatic analysis of ancient domesticated horses, highlighting the key research questions, methodological approaches and preliminary results of the study, devoting special attention to Migration period horses from the Carpathian Basin. The list of authors and the title of his presentation are as follows:

Dániel Gerber, Catherine Puello Mora, Botond Heltai, Melinda Megyes, Tivadar Vida, István Koncz, Levente Samu, Ádám Bollók, Péter Csippán, Annamária Bárány, Balázs Gusztáv Mende, Pablo Librado, Anna Szécsényi-Nagy:
Genomic composition of Migration Period horses in the Carpathian Basin

In her poster presentation, Veronika Csáky, Senior Research Fellow at our Institute, offered insight into the research carried out within the framework of the NKFIH-STARTING project that she leads. Together with her co-authors, she compared the social organization of two steppe-derived nomadic populations from the Carpathian Basin: the Avars (6th–8th centuries CE) and the early Hungarians (9th–10th centuries CE). By combining archaeogenomic analyses of complete cemeteries with archaeological context and spatial burial pattern data, the researchers identified clear differences between the social structures of the two groups. The list of authors and the title of the poster are as follows:

Veronika Csáky, Péter Langó, Balázs Gyuris, Bea Szeifert, Attila Türk, Zsombor Rokai, Balázs Gusztáv Mende, Anna Szécsényi-Nagy:
Similarities and Differences in the Social Organization of Two Steppe-Derived Populations in the Migration-Period Carpathian Basin
